Lamborghini's 770-hp Aventador SVJ takes the V12 flagship to the next level

LAMBORGHINI'S 770-HP AVENTADOR SVJ TAKES THE V12 FLAGSHIP
TO THE NEXT LEVEL

Finally, something for collectors: SVJ 63 will be the 'chase' version of Superveloce Jota

Just ahead of the Pebble Beach Concours Lamborghini took the wraps off the Aventador SVJ, the latest and most Superveloce (which means superfast) Aventador to date.

Created as the range-topping Aventador, the SVJ has already set a record around the Nurburgring, completing the lap in 6:44.97 minutes while relying on a lengthy mix of performance and aerodynamic tweaks to achieve the feat. Powered by a V12 engine tuned to 770 hp at a maximum of 8,500 rpm, the SVJ represents a bump of 79 hp over a "base" version of the model. Torque output is equally eye-watering, as the SVJ model serves up 531 lb-ft at 6,750 rpm. A reworked seven-speed Independent Shifting Road (ISR) gearbox has been optimized to cope with the extra power, and combined with a dry weight of 3,362 lbs that's enough to propel the SVJ from 0 to 62 mph in 2.8 seconds, and from 0 to 124 mph in 8.6 seconds, later on reaching a top speed just north of 217 mph. Is that Superveloce enough for fans of Sant'Agata cars?

Lamborghini focused on more than just pure power alone in creating the Aventador SVJ; Sant'Agata tweaked the Aventador's aerodynamics to produce greater downforce and to shave off some drag. As a result the SVJ is wider, wearing a new front bumper with integrated side fins, and features a new air intake and a floating front splitter. Larger side intakes and an all-new rocker panel design help reduce aerodynamic drag and improve cooling. Out back, a new diffuser works with an improved underbody aero design complete with vortex generators that channel air around the body while improving downforce at the rear axle. Meanwhile, a new rear wing with side winglets works to reduce turbulence and improve downforce during cornering and dead-straight blasts alike.

Just 900 examples of the SVJ will be produced.

SUPERCARS
The Lamborghini Aventador SVJ lapped the Nurburgring in 6:44

It looks like the Lamborghini Aventador SVJ is on top of the revolving list of Nurburgring kings. The latest addition to the Aventador lineup lapped the 'Ring in 6 minutes, 44 seconds -- ...

"The Aventador SVJ is an innovative car and represents the absolute pinnacle of our super sports car product range," said Automobili Lamborghini Chairman and Chief Executive Officer, Stefano Domenicali. "The challenge to Lamborghini designers and engineers was to improve the purest essence of the Lamborghini super sports car, drawing on every inspiration from a space ship to a jet fighter: all the most exceptional examples of super-fast, super-athletic, aerodynamic superiority. The Aventador SVJ takes another step into the future, shaping the potential for super sports car development."

Amid the visually-busy rear half it's almost easy to miss the high-mounted exhaust pipes sitting well above the rear diffuser, optimized to reduce backpressure. The SVJ also wears a new carbon fiber engine cover, designed just for this version.

But there is more yet to the SVJ than a retuned engine and new bodywork; the suspension has been reengineered to optimize grip, and even anti-roll bar stiffness has been improved by 50 percent over that of the Aventador SV model.

"The rear-wheel steering has been developed to further improve the car’s stability while reducing braking distances, particularly in combined braking/turning conditions such as high speed cornering," the automaker notes. "ESC has been enhanced for improved cornering and driver experience in extreme handling conditions, and ABS has been specifically tuned for the improved grip provided by the tires and [Aerodinamica Lamborghini Attiva] ALA system."

Sant'Agata reworked just about every aspect of the exterior of the base Aventador SV model.

You often can have too much of a good thing. Ice cream (stomachache), praise (overinflated self-esteem), money (not caring about your fellow human). But perfect, endless, traffic-free winding roads?

Lamborghini has also improved the four-wheel drive system of the SVJ to permit a further 3 percent to be sent to the rear axle, while tweaking the rear-wheel steering to enhance stability and reduce braking distance. Speaking of braking distance, new Pirelli P Zero Corsa tires have been developed specifically for the SVJ to provide higher vertical stiffness to cope with increased downforce and enhanced grip. And even the tires themselves feature a unique tread design.

How much will all this goodness cost? Lamborghini has mentioned a (very specific) suggested retail price of $517,770 when the Aventador SVJ goes on sale, with the first deliveries scheduled for early 2019. When it does go on sale it will certainly be in small company when it comes to its price range, but (in typical Lambo fashion) there will be an even more exclusive version of this car dubbed SVJ 63, to celebrate Lamborghini's founding in 1963. Just 63 example of the SVJ 63 will be built, but overall Aventador SVJ production will be capped at 900. So there's still room for mere mortals to get a place in line for a "regular" SVJ.

Tesla promises surprise reveal next week

The new model is expected to be a version of the Roadster, which was first shown in prototype form last November.

TESLA PROMISES SURPRISE REVEAL NEXT WEEK
Is a new Roadster version in the works?

Tesla is expected to reveal a new vehicle at the Grand Basel motor show next week, according to an invite sent to Tesla owners. The trip contest invitation shows a close-up view of a pillar, believed to be of the next-generation Roadster that Elon Musk revealed last year in prototype form. Billed as "a surprise," the Swiss event set for Sept. 5 may see the debut of the production version of the Roadster or a special version of the same car.

The next-gen Roadster was first shown in November 2017, promising a range of 620 miles and nothing short of hypercar stats: 0-60 mph in 1.9 seconds, quarter-mile runs in 8.8 seconds and a top speed of 250 mph. The Roadster is expected to enter production in 2020, though Tesla had already started accepting deposits for this halo model, which Elon Musk suggested may end up using actual rockets to improve its performance. Perhaps the Basel event will give a preview of this technology, which may boil down to jets of compressed air helping the car fight g-forces when going through curves.

RUMORMILL

From the moment of its very debut, the next-gen Tesla Roadster sparked plenty of skepticism with its promised specs, not to mention production timetable: 0-60 mph in 1.9 seconds, quarter-mile in 8.8...

It remains to be seen whether the model due to be revealed in Basel will be the production Roadster, a performance version of the car or a version with a full-retractable hardtop or soft top. The variant that Tesla has shown so far features a removable roof panel, making it more of a targa than a true open-top. Elon Musk had mentioned that we had only seen a "base" model when he revealed the preproduction version last November, so another variant of the Roadster is a strong possibility.

The Grand Basel motor show runs Sept. 6-9 in Basel, Switzerland.

RUMORMILL

Months after giving a surprise glimpse of the next Tesla model -- a return of the Roadster -- Elon Musk is churning up buzz for the planned production version with some ambitious promises. Last week...
